I actually think Pres Bushes mandate was a good thing in disguise. I foresee induced pluripotent stem cells being more clinically useful than embryonic stem cells (unless your patients enjoy being on immuno-suppressive drugs, and isn't clinical application of science the goal?). I highly doubt as much time and energy would have been put into ips cells had the mandate not been in place. I agree with the Nature article from 14 February 2008 that embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cell research needs to go on "on both sides," but ips cells probably wouldn't have been discovered had the Bush admin not set up the barrier for scientist to find ways around.
