over the river and through the woods

So I’m writing this entry sitting in a train, going back home after one of my residency interviews, staring out the window. It’s 8:22 am on a Sunday morning (…to be posted once I get home…), the sun is shining bright and we are traveling through some beautiful country (I wish I had a picture of it for you…). Wilderness punctuated with patches of cleared farmland. Some cows grazing in a field we just passed. Trees trees trees trees trees river trees trees red barn—you get the point. Sort of makes me think about how much beautiful country is out there that I haven’t seen.

It’s for that reason that I always try to make all my trips by car or train. I also make at least one long road trip every year as vacation. I wish there was more time for traveling, but it is what it is. The academic life keeps me busy and even now when I’m done with this entry, I’m eventually going to have to turn away from the window and spend some time on a manuscript that needs to be wrapped up.

I guess I’ll have to get used to living life at 70mph, but I’d much rather be doing it in a car driving along the coast…
