i hate flying - my rant

So I made it to sunny San Diego today for another residency interview.  Granted the travails of flying are worth it for San Diego, I still hate flying.  Especially now that what little courtesy the airlines used to offer is non-existent.  I flew with Delta today and (1) the plane for my first flight was switched out and the seat I had chosen when buying my ticket was reassigned, (2) that flight landed 40 minutes late and I had a 50 minute scheduled layover.  The incoming flight was about as far as you could get from the connecting flight to San Diego–at the distal ends of different terminals.  I sprinted to the

other gate and passed a Delta information desk on the way where I stopped and asked the Delta employee working there if he could call ahead to the gate and tell them that I was on my way–running over right then, to which he responded, “No.  They will not hold that flight for you.  It will leave on time and they will not hold the flight for you.  You should save yourself the time and not even go over there because I’m telling you that you will not make it there in time.  You should just wait here and see if I can reschedule you for another flight.”  But, I sprinted over there anyway to find that not only was boarding still going on, but I waited about 15 minutes in line on the jetway to get onto the plane after which the plane sat at the gate for another 15 minutes.  If I had listened to the purveyor all things “Delta Information”, I would have been booked for another flight while my flight sat at the gate.  At the very least he could have picked up the phone and checked what was going on.  Useless.  And (3) connecting flight taxied out to the runway where we sat for 30 min until we were informed by the pilot that the instrument panels were showing “fire” and that we would either return to the gate or get it taken care of–ended up being a false alarm.

Rant rant rant.  Give me a car any day–that’s how I’ll be getting from here to L.A. to Seattle in the next 5 days.

But, at the very least I was flying to San Diego.
