support open access scientific journals

Science and knowledge should be freely available to everyone.  What’s the point of publishing cutting-edge discoveries if only wealthy academic institutions can afford to have subscriptions to those journals?  What about a university in a developing country that may not have the same resources as universities and academic centers in the USA or Europe?  Shouldn’t they have access to cutting edge research as well?  I can’t imagine any reason why not.

These days, most journals have adopted more socially responsible approaches–usually making all scientific journal articles freely available to anyone over the web after 1 year post-publication (which is better than never).  However, that still forces those without access to be at least 1 year behind on cutting-edge science.

Support open access journals including those published by the Public Library of Science (PLoS):

www.plos.org

and those published by the biomedcentral:

www.biomedcentral.com

Each of these publishers put out a number of journals covering all conceivable topics in biomedical research–and every article published in those journals is freely accessible over the internet from the instant of publication.  If you are at a location that doesn’t have access to biomedical journal subscriptions, take advantage of these journals.  Moreover, if you are planning on submitting a scientific manuscript, consider submitting to a journal from one of these publishers.
