standard questions to ask faculty during residency interviews

Obviously you will probably have your own personal questions to ask faculty during your residency interviews, but if you are ever at a loss for questions to ask, here are some safe ones:

  • What medical schools do the current residents come from?
  • What is the success rate of graduates on specialty boards/fellowship spots/finding jobs?
  • What are clinical/Non-clinical/administrative responsibilities of residents?
  • What kinds of research opportunities exist in the department?
  • What are the major focuses of research in the department?
  • Is their any research time built into the program?
  • Is there funding and protected time for attending conferences?
  • Teaching opportunities and responsibilities of residents?
  • How are residents reviewed and given feedback? How often and by whom?
  • What do the residents do after finishing (practice/academics/fellowship)?
  • Is there a formal mentoring program?
  • How many days a week do residents spend in clinic?
  • Is there a foreign exchange program/opportunities to do away electives?
  • What makes the program unique?
  • Do you foresee any changes in the program in the near future?
  • Show you are observant and ask a question from something you observed on a tour/rounds etc
