standard questions to ask faculty during residency interviews
Obviously you will probably have your own personal questions to ask faculty during your residency interviews, but if you are ever at a loss for questions to ask, here are some safe ones:
- What medical schools do the current residents come from?
- What is the success rate of graduates on specialty boards/fellowship spots/finding jobs?
- What are clinical/Non-clinical/administrative responsibilities of residents?
- What kinds of research opportunities exist in the department?
- What are the major focuses of research in the department?
- Is their any research time built into the program?
- Is there funding and protected time for attending conferences?
- Teaching opportunities and responsibilities of residents?
- How are residents reviewed and given feedback? How often and by whom?
- What do the residents do after finishing (practice/academics/fellowship)?
- Is there a formal mentoring program?
- How many days a week do residents spend in clinic?
- Is there a foreign exchange program/opportunities to do away electives?
- What makes the program unique?
- Do you foresee any changes in the program in the near future?
- Show you are observant and ask a question from something you observed on a tour/rounds etc
