“grandma got popped…”
…is how the ER resident I was working with described this patient.
So, it’s close to midnight, and I just back from a shift in the emergency room. I spent part of this evening picking out pieces of buckshot from the back of a 74-year-old lady who had the misfortune of being the target of a botched carjacking. Luckily for her, when the carjackers unloaded their shotgun into the rear driver-side passenger window, the driver’s seatback absorbed most of the buckshot and its momentum, leaving this patient with only superficial penetration of about 20-30 pieces of buckshot in her back and shoulders. The amazing part is that for having gone through a potentially near-death experience, she was just sitting there–completely cooperative as though nothing had really happened. This was one tough lady. So in the end, I guess it could’ve been much worse.
But, you gotta wonder what this world is coming to when grandma gets popped…
